Full name:
Hay Lin (Irma likes to great her with "Hey Hay") Even though Lin is her last name, everyone trends to call her Hay Lin, instead of just Hay.
Age:
She's 13 when the comics start and was born June 4th.
Family:
Hay Lin's family owns the Silver Dragon, a Chinese restaurant in down town Heatherfield. Joan Lin is a practical woman with grace and a collection of Chinese stories that she likes to tell Hay Lin. She loves surprises! Her birth name is Joan Chou (or Chou Joan how it would be said in Asia) and she grew up in a big estate in Hong Kong with tight schedules and servants (issue #93). She met Chen Lin in her late teen years. He was a hired servant to Joan and her friends. Joan had a dog as well, called Troopy. The two teens fell in love despite their different social standings and Joan left her home in order to marry Chen. She was disinherited and every year a man with divorce papers comes to the Lins to try and get Joan back to the Chou family until they resolve the matter in issue 93 once and for all.
Hay Lin's grandfather Khan Chou is a rich merchant who is strict and traditional in his ways. As the head of the family and several servants, he is used to command and his orders being followed. But he loves his daughter dearly and wants what's best for her and to keep her close and safe. He sees much of Joan in Hay Lin.
As for Joan's mother, she is only shown briefly in issue 93 and is not with the older Mr. Chou later in the issue. It is unclear if she has passed away or if she maybe just wasn't in that part of the estate when the Lin's visited. In issue 110 she is seen again in a memory of Joan bringing an expensive and special gift for her daughter's birthday. Mrs. Chou always appears elegant and almost perfect in her demeanour. A kind smile but calm and correct. Not big laughs or gestures.
There are few other members mentioned of the Chou family. In issue 110 Joan speaks of an aunt Long who embroidered a towel and a fan that belonged to Hay Lin's great grandmother.
Chen Lin is a bit clumsy but has a big heart and smiles and laughs a lot. After the time of servitude at the Chou's estate, he seems happy to be free and with his love Joan. He is one of two cooks in the restaurant and creates dishes for the customers. He is no good as a waiter, however since he cannot remember the orders of each table. In issue 108 Hay Lin says that he likes to get funny ideas or into certain "manias" that change constantly. If he has the idea of living healthy, he changes the food even for his customers which can cause problems for the restaurants reputation. Or he changes the colors of the interior without telling anyone before hand, or takes away all decorations because it feels cleaner that way. These manias usually don't last long but still Hay and Joan have a rough time "fixing" Chen's ideas. His biggest hobby however is ornithology - the watching of birds. He and Hay Lin like to sneak out occasionally to drive out during dawn and watch birds by a pond. Neither Joan, nor Chen know anything of magic.
Her grandmother on her (father's side) Yan Lin is a lovely and funny old lady who was a guardian once herself and was entrusted with the Heart of Kandrakar after the former Keeper died. It was her that told the girls about their powers and tasks as guardians and she also presented the Heart to Will. Early in Arc 1 she dies and is accepted to Kandrakar where she resides as one of the wisemen. Much later in issue 38 after Himerish's banishment, Yan Lin becomes candidate for Oracle against Endarno but looses the election. In issue 49 she becomes part of the Triumvirat or Trinity Empire and in issue 86 finally receives the title of Oracle. On a more personal note, it is indicated that Yan Lin was around when Joan was still a young child to tell her stories (issue #9). This could mean that she, too was part of the Chou household. She and Hay Lin have a special and close bond.
The Lin family in general is said to have lived in Heatherfield for a long time and so the restaurant, which is run by the family, is located in the historic district down town (see special information about the Lin family). Another bit of information is found in the room sheet of Hay Lin. The painting on the wall was made by her great-great grandfather and shows a traditional Chinese landscape. It is said that there were two artists and one poet in the Lin family and in order to honour the artistic root of the family, Hay Lin has decided to become an artist herself.

Home:
Until issue 81 the Lin family lives above the Silver Dragon restaurant. Later they move to White Mountain, a district at the edge of Heatherfield. The reason is that
their restaurant is going so well, that they decided to use the space of the top floors to expand the restaurant. While at first Hay Lin doesn't like the new house, she quickly changes her mind
due to it's airy traits. The house is called "dragonfly" and was built to withstand even the strongest of winds.
But due to the big load of work in the Silver Dragon they half ways move back in.
School:
Same as the other girls, Hay Lin goes to Sheffield Institute. Hay Lin is in Class 2B when the comics start, together with Irma and Taranee. She sits at the back of the class by the window with
Irma left to her and Taranee behind her.
She loves artistic classes and hates... well, pretty much everything else. Especially physics. She likes to sit....
Traits:
Hay Lin is a dreamy and preoccupied girl with a favour for aliens. She is extremely creative and skilled with her hands when it comes to any kind of art. She doesn't go with trends, she sets new ones and seems resistant to any kind of embarrassment - unlike most teenage girls. She's very cheery and silly sometimes, inventing new words to express her amazement or joy. But Hay Lin's head is up in the clouds and so she bumps into people, is generally clumsy and things easily slip her mind. One reason why she writes things onto her hand. With all the ideas in her head she tends to have a very messy room. She also has long conversations on the phone and sleeps in often. The latter makes her more than once run after the bus because she's late. She also has nightmares often and falls out of bed. Change is a difficult thing for her. She doesn't like it and has a hard time accepting it.

Hobbies:
Hay Lin, similar to Irma is rarely shown doing sports. The two joke around being good at eating and hanging on the couch. Still, she joins the others at Jensens
dance academy and does like to roller skate. She's more of an artist, loves to draw and designs and sews her own clothes. Later she makes different kinds of jewellery out of her brace for the
other girls and she helps out several times at the school's theatre with costumes and scenery. In issue .... she discovers music for herself and starts playing bass.
Habits:
Hay Lin writes a lot on her hand. Things she shouldn't forget, things that come to mind or simple doodles. Taranee once said she'd get ink poisoning sooner or later.
Likes:
Space stuff! A lot. She loves stars and aliens and anything that somewhat has to do with space and is the one most eager to get to know other races across the worlds
Kandrakar protects.
She's also very talented when it comes to all things arts and tinkering and enjoys it even more. Apart from designing and sewing clothes, she likes drawing, mixing teas, building paper dragons,
jewellery or origami.
Throughout the comic Hay Lin is also seen inline skating. She seems to enjoy it a lot even though she is clumsy at the same time.
Dislikes:

Love interest:
Her first known love is Eric Lyndon who she met one summer vacation in issue 18. Later Eric moves to another town and while at first, the relationship endures and Hay Lin even visits him, at some point there is no more mention of Eric. Instead Wesley appears and is Hay Lin's temporary love.
Friends:
Outside of W.I.T.C.H. Hay Lin doesn't seem to have many friends. Unlike the other girls she rarely hangs out with anyone but her fellow-guardians, her current boyfriend or her grandmother. She becomes introverted when surrounded by other peers though she has less problems getting along with adults. She is seem a couple of times having good conversations with elders.
Guardian Role:
Hay Lin is the guardian of air and during their first transformation the only one capable of flying. She's honored to be chosen and eager to make her
grandmother proud. She loves her magical life which also makes her the most obedient one of the girls. She never questions her role or the tasks she's given.
Entrusted Artefact:
The map of Twelve Portals.
Element:
Air
Basic Powers:
Hay Lin can lift pretty much anything into the air. Objects or even people. She can make them float to wherever she wants and is the only one in the team who
can fly - at least until the girls receive their second transformation. She can create winds of different strength, blow away enemies or extinguish or feed fire. Later she can create and control
entire tornados or use her powers to blow away smells, objects, and much more.
When below water she can create air bubbles - similar to Irma.
Her power usually looks like silver clouds or trails of smoke.
Communication Powers:
Most of the girls have a way to communicate with their element. Hay Lin can communicate with Yan Lin in Kandrakar through windbells for example, so early on her power refers to sounds.
Also she says the air would whisper to her when she enters Meridian for the second time. She can experience the city simply by listening.
Guardian Powers:
Being a guardian seems to come with a set of powers all of the team can use:
Nymph Gift:
...
Other Powers:
Hay Lin developes a sense of hearing that lets her interpret sounds and see the memory of the equivalent object. For this she has to recreate a sound for example throw the object to the floor or in case of a music box, make it play. Then the sound echoes in her head until she starts to see images. At first they are blurred and jumbled and after time become more clear.
Weaknesses:
Everyone has a weakness, most people have several. ...

Not much is known about Hay Lin's childhood. Apart from her parents and grandmother she seems to haven't had any contact with other relatives or know much about her parents' former life. In a special paper on Hay Lin's childhood it is said that her creativity came from one morning when she was seven years old. As she awoke there were colorful lights floating along the walls and ceiling. She couldn't quite believe her eyes until she saw Yan Lin standing in the room with a lantern that had colored glass. She had build it herself and little Hay Lin thought it so pretty she decided to create things herself. After that she started tinkering and drawing and doing all kinds of artsy stuff.
Every oracle gifted the readers with a vision of the future. While Will was the only one to see Endarno's (who was really Phobos at that moment), all of them watched Himerish's possible future, the first one and they even had a choice with Yan Lin's, the last one.
Himerish shows the girls not only a possible past, but the first possible future. They are in the Hall of Spirits and watch their future selves on a kind of mirror or screen.
In that future Hay Lin is a stewardess and very confident about herself. She's energetic as always and brings self made tea blends to the girl's meeting. Ceremoniously she presents each girl with
her equivalent tea, the way Yan Lin had told them about their powers so many years ago.
Endarno's version of the future is actually a trick.
He forces Will into a vision aproximately 4-5 years ahead where her life has taken a lonely path. While she is the only one seeing this possible future, the other girls do play a role in this.
In the vision, Taranee is attending Cornelia's college acceptance party and has longer hair than usual. She is the only one who doesn't come off as cliché popular girl standing in the back of the others.
At the end of the comics Yan Lin offers the girls another glimpse of a possible future, exactly 10 years. Each one receives a key to a door. By stepping through, Hay Lin is ins a neighbourhood with groceries. She has bangs for the first time ever in the comic. At first she is rather disappointed. She seems to know her neighbours and has a normal and univentful life. As she enters her appartment however Hay Lin is confronted with her babysitter... She has a little baby girl! The child is the reason why Hay Lin doesn't kick her door down. She wants the chance of having such a lovely child to remain.
