Ceremonies

In Kandrakar, several ceremonies take place. Most of the ones we read about in the comics are connected to the Oracle initiation and vote. But there are others as well.

Below you'll find all ceremonies that were mentioned in the comics.

Sealing Kandrakar

In order to protect Kandrakar from the threat of Dark Mother, the Oracle demands for the seals. It is not clear how many seals there are. The recited words indicate that there are three. The first one blocks all light. The second closes all portals leading from and to the Fortress,  and the third one prevents all spiritual communication outside the Fortress. In order to activate the seal, the Oracle and one of its consultants have to present a kind of box or plate and recite the following words while a lid appears and closes in the bright light from the plate:

Oracle:

I close Kandrakar from the light!

May the eternal sun's light no longer reach in!

Yan Lin:

And may only the flame shine from within Kandrakar,

Enclosed in its shell.

Oracle:

I close Kandrakar for all travellers!

May no portal stay open!

Yan Lin:

And alone may those who live here stay.

Oracle:

I close Kandrakar from all thoughts!

Yan Lin:

And lonely may the pure intellects,

of the ones living in this kingdom, stay.

Oracle:

Now our world is fortified.

Hard as diamond,

Heavy as stone!

Once the ceremony is complete, Kandrakar is enclosed by a thick stone dome.

This ceremony has already been done at least once in Kandrakar's history. In issue 75 Ari mentions that it hasn't been done in "ages" which is very vague and doesn't tell for what reason the fortress had been sealed before.

The Palace's Yearbook

Especially memorable events ("epoch-making change") are being written down into the yearbook of the Fortress. It is a magical book and its ink is fire in a golden ink well.
While it's called a ceremony, it's one of a special kind. For the first part, only the Oracle seems to be witness. After that he joins the Congregation where his power is divided between his chosen co-Oracles.

What else has been written down into this Yearbook is unknown.

As you can see above, this ceremony is used when the Oracle decides to divide its power through a trinity rule with Endarno and Yan Lin (#49)

Purification Ceremony

This ceremony is like a "spring cleaning", how Yan Lin puts it (#72). The Oracle asks the members of the Council to unleash their magic within the fortress, uniting to a radiant green glow that fills entire Kandrakar.
While the magic is roaming free, the Council meditates and for 24 hours, Kandrakar seeks no contact whatsoever with the outside worlds. This is to keep the magic within the fortress. However this also means that for this one day, Kandrakar is not able to serve its purpose as the ever watchful eye on the balance of the universe.

It is unclear how often this ceremony is held.

Khandran

The Khandran is a ceremonious trial, used to judge the questionable doings of a member of Kandrakar, or guardian. For example it can be used to exchange one or several guardians with new ones should they not have fulfilled their roles(#15).

In this trial, the accused can be one person or several and is clad in a red robe and presented to the Council of Wisemen in chains. The Oracle recites the charges. After this the accused has the chance to explain his or her actions and the motive to the Council. The accused is sent away until the Council has made a decision. This decision seems to be a vote in which the Oracle's vote has a higher weight but cannot lead to the final judgement alone. Once a decision is made, the accused is returned to the Council to hear the judgement. This is read out aloud from a scroll by the Oracle. (#18)

Examples for a Khandran:

1. Nerissa, former guardian and charged with murder of her comrade Cassidy. She was
sentenced to outlive her remaining long life in a tomb in mount Thanos without company or
help, stripped of her magic abilities.

2. Luba, keeper of the Aurameres. Her case is a "first" in the history of Kandrakar, as Yan Lin
states. She is accused of wilfully interfering with the guardian's lives, endangering them and
lying to the Oracle. As punishment she has to give up her immortality and save Caleb from
Nerissa. Luba dies fulfilling these terms and her soul is declared free of all debts.

The Khandran can only be declared by an Oracle. That is why Endarno could not trial the guardians in order to get rid of them, since he didn't have the full powers of an Oracle; and why Luba had to beg the Oracle to call out the Khandran on the guardians instead of doing it herself, after she found them unworthy of their tasks.
