Owners
The map was officially handed over to Hay Lin for safekeeping by Yan Lin before she died on Earth. However Hay Lin was supposed to give the map to Will which she
never did. After the first copy of the map was burned in Kandrakar, the new map was handed over to Will until the second copy, too disappeared. It's not clear if there were other owners before
the girls' time.
Function
The first copy of the map is supposed to help the girls find and close the 12 portals to the Metaworld. It shows Heatherfield and lights up in a bright colour if a
new portal appears. The portals then are marked on the map. Sometimes the heart can be used similar to a pendulum to hint towards the best next step the girls should take.
The second copy of the map also shows Heatherfield but this time it doesn't light up at all. Instead it presents itself on the wall of the girls' headquarters around Ludmoors book to show where
the 5 element stones are located.
When Hay Lin first receives the map it is a blank paper that suddenly becomes the map.
It's possible that the map always wipes itself after its use has been fulfilled. This would explain, why the map can be used in different ways and for different purposes.
Acceptance
Hay Lin is very happy and mystified by the map. Since it was given to her by her grandmother she is certain it has value and use. The other girls are sceptical, especially Irma and Cornelia. They seem mostly annoyed by the map than value it.
